Abstract: The transverse grate inlets generally were installed to intercept surface runoff on the steep local roads which are connected to the main road. The discharge that was not intercepted at transverse grate inlets on steep local roads has increased the inundation areas around the main street. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the flow characteristics and interception capacity at transverse grate inlets on steep local roads. For this study, hydraulic experimental apparatus including longitudinal slopes of local roads and the sizes and the types of transverse grate inlets were designed. The longitudinal slopes ranged from 2 to10% , the sizes of the transverse grate inlet varied from 20 to 50cm, and the types of the grate inlet were TYPE I and II. The grate of TYPEⅠhave hole shapes that bars of grate are arrayed at the perpendicular angle with flow direction and TYPEⅡ have those that they are arrayed at same direction with flow, as shown in table 2. The range of the experimental discharges were from 2ℓ/sec to 24ℓ/sec. When the longitudinal slopes of local road were over 4% , the interception capacities of transverse grate inlets decreased due to water membrane phenomena rather than splash-over one. The interception discharges of transverse grate inlets per unit width changing the longitudinal slope of steep local road were calculated by the hydraulic experiment results. These test results can be used to decide the type, the length, and the install space of the transverse grate inlets on steep local roads.
