Evaluation of Heavy Metal’s Pollution Effects on The

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the pollution effects of the heavy metals on the sediments/water/aquatic plants samples taken from locations around POYANG Lake, which is the biggest freshwater lake in China. LE’AN River is one of the 5 branches of POYANG Lake. The largest copper mineral factoriy in China, DEXING Mineral Factory, is located upriver in the Le’an River, so it is the main pollution source of heavy metals in the Le’an River and POYANG Lake. A survey on the levels of heavy metals in waters, sediments and aquatic plants samples was conducted to determinate and evaluate the contamination of heavy metals in this paper. It is used AAS (flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer) and GFAAS (graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry) to determinate the levels of heavy metals such as Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd and their compounds in the samples. The results indicated that the water in the investigated areas was not contaminated by heavy metals,and the water quality can be accorded to the first standard of evaluation criterion of surface water of China. But the concentrations of heavy metals of Cu, Pb, Zn in sediments and soils are relatively higher. Different plants have different selective enrichment of heavy metals. The enrichments were correlated to the backgrounds of heavy metals in soils, the more concentrated heavy metals in soils, the more enriched heavy metals in aquatic plants.
