Abstract: The term ‘nanofluid’ was first proposed by Choi about a decade ago 1, to designate an ‘engineered’ colloid, composed of submicronic solid particles (i. e., nanoparticles) dispersed in a base fluid. Materials commonly used for nanoparticles include chemically stable metals (e. g., gold, silver, copper), metal oxides (e. g., alumina, zirconia, silica, titania) and carbon (e. g., diamond, fullerene). Popular base fluids include water, refrigerants and organic fluids such as ethanol and ethylene glycol. Nanofluids have captured the attention of the engineering community mainly because they seem to offer the potential for enhanced heat transfer.
