Abstract: We examined the behavior of sediment at the bottom of the Nibutani Dam Reservoir by using automated turbidimeters to study turbidity and acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) to study flow characteristics. When an orifice gate is open, water in the bottom layer of the reservoir flows toward the dam body. Turbidity was found to increase with increases in flow velocity in the bottom layer of water. SS load is underestimated if it is calculated using SS observations averaged for all layers. The volume of sediment resuspended from reservoir beds is underestimated if it is calculated using 1-D calculation that uses average flow velocity. It is necessary to develop 2-D soil particles behavior simulation model.
