Abstract: By the increase of water pressure which could be due to the head of the water, the flow discharge within the outlet conduits will be increased. This phenomena will create more sever conditions for the outlets or control gates. In this situation, it is necessary to ensure of the safety operation of the outlet or control gates. In addition, flow velocity, pressure distribution, cavitation, vibration of structure and hydrodynamic forces are the main aspects in the design of such structures. In order to ensure the hydraulic behaviour of these structures, it is necessary to check the behaviour of outlet conduits under different status of gate openings. This paper presents a numerical investigation to evaluate the hydrodynamic forces on outlet gates through a high pressure conduit tunnel of a dam. Two types of gates were involved, a leaf gate in the middle of the conduit and a sluice gate at the end of it. Numerical analysis of flow based on three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with the consideration of a kepsilon turbulence model was considered. The study also consists of the physical model Dasht-e-Abbas outlet tunnel in Iran to check the validity of the model. The comparison of the results show a sensible agreement between the physical measurements and the numerical computations.
