Abstract: The modern urban drainage system of the city of Rome is here developed; starting with interventions realised by the Municipal Administration, follows a description of the activities conducted by ACEA ATO2. In particular it is here illustrated the subdivision of the city land in four drainage basins, each served by a main wastewater treatment plant (Roma Nord, Roma Sud, Roma Est and Ostia), and the reasons for the choice of a separated sewer system in the area nearby the sea (served by the Ostia treatment plant) and for the affirmation of a combined system in the remaining urban land. It is then described the information system designed by ACEA ATO2 to manage data related to the sewer network and all hydraulic facilities (GIS), as well as the telemetry system, the rain gauge network and the monitoring station to control water quality of the river Tiber in real time. Moreover are listed both study activities entirely developed by ACEA ATO2 and research activities developed with the contribution of the Universities of Rome, particularly related to hydraulic modelling and technical hydrology. It is finally described the monitoring activity conducted by the Environmental Operation Room, including the whole report production both in normal operating conditions and during critical events. At the end, guidelines for the future evolution of the urban drainage system of Rome are delineated.
