Abstract: EDF, the French Utility, is operating 58 nuclear reactors in France, all PWR and is building a new third generation PWR in Flamanville (on the sea shore in Normandy). In this context, EDF has to face the following stakes. - Improving continuously nuclear safety by evaluating the impact of component changes and/or fuel management, by answering questions raised by safety authorities in producing trustworthy and validated studies and by controlling the existing and future margins. - Enhancing performances by extending life time of key components (core vessel) and reducing maintenance costs (steam generators and other heat exchangers). - Evaluating and testing virtually new designs for evaluating impact on environment or exploitability (GenIV).
