Abstract: The advantages of stepped spillways over conventional smooth spillways and the flow regimes occurring on stepped chutes have been reviewed. Then the numerical analysis of skimming flow using shallow water equations in inclined coordinate system has been presented. The equations have been converted to discrete form using the overlapping cell vertex finite volume method on triangular unstructured mesh. Experimental relations have been used for simulating air entrainment and computing the inception point characteristics, air concentration distribution and velocity distribution simultaneously with analyzing flow parameters. The results have been compared with an experimental model. Finally, the best experimental relations for simulating the entrainment of air into the supercritical flow on stepped spillways have been chosen.
