Abstract: Local concentrated heavy rainfall yields flood damage due to insufficient capacity of drainage system in urban area. In the cities where stormwater drainage system is relatively well established flood damage still occurs because the flooding due to recent heavy rainfall exceeds capacity limitation of the drainage system. When the excessive flood occurs in urban area, it yields huge property losses of public facilities involving roadway inundation to paralyze industrial and transportation system of the city. Thus it is necessary to develop adequate inundation analysis model which can consider complex topography of urban area and drainage system simultaneously. This study developed an urban flood inundation model by integrating drainage analysis model with surface flood analysis model. For model integration SWMM is employed to estimate surcharged overflow with analysis of drainage network, and DEM based 2dimensional flood analysis model has been developed, which can consider the effect of complex buildings in urban area. The model has been applied to the Dorim drainage basin located in Seoul, Korea for the flood event occurred in July, 2001. During the model simulation the analysis results of inundation process and time variable drainage procedures are provided and compared with the flood trace map for model verification. Using the proposed model developed in this study it is possible to compute maximum inundation depth and maximum inundation ranges efficiently to use for designing drainage system to estimate flood damages. The model application also involves site selection for valuable facilities, residence protection and withdrawal, and flood damages identification.
