Abstract: The turbulence of a river will increase the interaction between the dissolved oxygen (DO) and the organic compound in rivers, and then affect the biodegradation behavior of the organic compound directly. Furthermore, the turbulence can enhance the DO concentration which is a positive factor on the biodegradation, and then affect the biodegradation indirectly. According to the research based on the turbulence-biodegradation experiments, this paper described an approach to calculate the biodegradation rate, k1, and tried to integrate the different reaction theories with one single equation. The factors affecting biodegradation rate were investigated, respectively, including the DO concentration, the organic compound concentration, and the turbulence intensity. It was shown that the k1 can be expressed as the function of the turbulence intensity, the DO concentration, and the organic compound concentration. The given formula can provide reasonable explanations for different reaction issues: the zero-order reaction in the lower organic compound concentration, the second-order reaction in the higher organic compound concentration, and the first-order reaction under the laboratory conditions, within one single equation.
