The Evaluation of Developable Amount with Riverbank Filtration - a Case in Korea

Abstract: In developed countries, riverbank filtration has a history of approximately 150 years. In Korea, the feasibility of riverbank filtration has been investigated since 1990's for large river basins, to find a solution to stably meet the ever-increasing demand for water. In this study, we have evaluated the developable amount of water with riverbank filtration for two largest river basins in Korea. As for the Han River basin, our attention was focused on the City of Seoul boundary, while four specific locations were studied in the Nakdong River basin. In selecting the proper site for riverbank filtration, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was used, which selects the most optimal alternative by hierarchically classifying various attributes and then quantifying the importance of them. For estimating the developable amount, we have conducted groundwater modeling. In the Han River basin, the annual developable amount of the site studied was estimated to be about 12. 3 million m3, whereas total 160 million m3 was estimated at four locations in the Nakdong River basin.
