Abstract: The pollutants in the small river are removed by its biological, chemical and physical self- purification. Therefore, it is required that self-purification in the river is correctly estimated in the field for the effective management of river water quality. In this study, we assessed mass balance and self-purification through various experiments in Osan river where is located in Kyunggi Do and shows typical characteristics of urban river and estimated purification effect of porous concrete which was a material manufactured to apply to natural purification process. Based on the results, sedimentation in Osan river was investigated as a major factor in the removal reactions of pollutant matters. Primary production by photosynthetic plankton in Osan river corresponded to 12. 6% for total organic matter amount and degradation by microorganism did 4. 8% . Although these values are low comparing to stagnated water environment such as lake and reservoir, if we consider that hydraulic retention time of Osan river is very short compared with them, it has a very important significance in estimating origination of organic matters. Microorganisms attached on the various riverbed materials take an important role in consume or production of organic matters, nutrient and DO in the stream. From the results of high purification efficiency of SS and BOD (92. 2% and 67. 2 % , respectively) by porous concrete in natural purification process, porous concrete is very useful contact media. Therefore it is recognized that porous concrete is one of the greatly expected materials in the natural purification process in the both sides of conservation of ecosystem and function of favoring water.
