Abstract: A major occurrence cause of bridge scour is known an effect of vortex. The vortex is influenced by flow conditions, variations of river flow, riverbed materials and shape of pier. However, because scour involved many other causes and complex forms, it is impossible to estimate the accurate scour depth through physical modeling and numerical test. Recently, for the reliable scour prediction, real-time bridge scour monitoring is actively performing. As a part of this approach, ultrasonic sensor which not only can detect river bottom in floods but also can install close to the underwater structures was developed. This sensor perceives the river bottom using ultrasonic wave and has various reflective characteristics according to bottom situations. So if we could reveal the reflective characteristics through received signals, it is possible to know how the materials of the river bottom are consisted. In this study, a laboratory experiment is to classify the received signal characteristics which is depend on riverbed materials. As result of this experiment, we proposed a graph which is possible to classify materials of river bottom through the received ultrasonic signal. And the proposed graph was verified through the comparison with field data.
