Abstract: The determination of hydrodynamic pressures exerted on the upstream face of dams is of main interest in designing and evaluating the safety of these structures in seismically active regions. In a quest for simplified, yet accurate and easy to use procedures, researchers have proposed various methods ranging from simplified formulations to finite element modeling and boundary integral equations. Most of the simplified formulas are generally based on many restricting assumptions, such as neglecting water compressibility, gravity waves and reservoir bottom absorption. Exhaustive studies carried out have shown that the changes to the hydrodynamic pressure due to energy dissipating mechanisms in the reservoir, can be considerably important, and may not always be on the conservative side. The effect of presence of sediment layers on hydrodynamic pressures on gravity dams is studied using a closed-form formulation for the eigenvalues problem arising due to consideration of absorbing reservoir bottom condition. The present study brings out the significant excitation frequencies in the analysis of dynamic response of a dam-reservoir system.
