Abstract: During the last few decades, the Upper Drau River draining the southern areas of the main range of the Alps in Tyrol/Austria has often been subject to floods with high bed load rates. In order to improve the flood control, investigations were made to find out the best way for the bed load management of the watershed. Apart from the analysis of the actual conditions, also the expected future conditions were estimated by way of numerical simulations. Various options of interventions were selected as effective counter measures for critical developments. A new design concept was especially developed for the improvement of bed load displacement in former artificially widened reaches, which can also accommodate ecological demands.
