Abstract: An analysis of the main criteria of identification of vortexes is carried out. A study is made on the limits applicability of the criteria existing in literature, by means of the application of the above criteria to a three-dimensional velocity field in a dominium bounded by solid walls (lid driven cavity) obtained by numerical simulation. A new criterion for the identification of vortexes, which is able to overcome the theoretical and applicative limits of the existing criteria, is formulated and applied to the above mentioned velocity field.
