Abstract: A DSS for operation of a reservoir has been developed. The DSS, named RESOPER (REServoir OPERation), enables to easily develop and validate reservoir operating rules, in order to determine releases from the reservoir in a given month based on available information only, namely water storage, inflows, water demands and previous releases. Once a series of optimal releases is obtained by dynamic programming, on the basis of historic streamflow series and demand scenarios, such releases can be expressed as a function of input variables by means of multiple regression equations, neural networks or fuzzy rules. The user can choose different rules structures and variables for each month, and then the behavior of the reservoir in achieving operation objectives through the simulation under selected operation rules can be assessed by using several performance indices. The DSS runs on Windows platforms and comprises three basic modules: a user-friendly graphical interface managing all graphic features; a computational engine where all the algorithms are implemented; a database and files module managing hydrological and operational data. A sample application of the DSS to a Sicilian Case-study is reported.
