Abstract: The Ganges is one of the three major rivers in Bangladesh. It is a sediment-laden wide meandering river. This paper deals with the stochastic generation of sediment loads of the lower Ganges river. The annual sediment load series of the Ganges is trend free at 5% significance level. The means and standard deviations of monthly sediment load data show periodicity. The month-to-month correlation structure is non stationary. The sediment load data of the lower Ganges river has been generated by using stochastic model. Monthly sediment load data have been modeled using the Thomas - Fiering model for the dependent stochastic component and by taking variable month-to-month correlation structure into account. The statistical parameters of observed and generated data match pretty well. Thus the generated sediment loads may be used for future planning and design of the water resources project.
