Abstract: General aspects and specific utilization of the HYDROMATRIX _R_-technology developed by VA TECH HYDRO GmbH & Co in existing hydro civil structures have already been the subject of several previous articles [1] [2] [3] [4]. The use of the HYDROMATRIX _R_technology in new low-head power plants requires reconsideration of the schemes of conventionally designed power plants. A reduction of construction costs up to 25% in comparison to a conventional plant can be achieved by omitting the civil structure of the power house. Further economic advantages would result by the use of standardized electro- mechanical equipment and its low maintenance costs. In the presented paper several conceptual design studies of new low head power plants will be developed and evaluated under consideration of their particular dominating boundary conditions. For the further development of hydropower as renewable energy this technology promises a high economic potential for the future.
