Abstract: Even though drinking water quality standards in Seoul are similar to the United States' Safe Drinking Water Act standards, the Han River water quality has been getting worse since the relaxation of the land use law on the upper Han River basin in 1994. Therefore, Seoul citizens have a fear of drinking water. The Han River water quality is getting worse from the first class water (BOD criterion 1 ppm below) to the second class water (1 to 3 ppm), and the unacceptable quality in total nitrogen and total phosphorous mainly due to the farm runoff.
