Abstract: Bank erosion and river channel migration could be prevented and minimized by spur dikes built along the bank of rivers, because the near bank flow is substantially weakened by the dike or dike field. In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model is applied to simulate the turbulent free surface flow around a submerged dike. The simulated results show very good agreement with those (2592 measuring points) observed in the physical experiment. Standard turbulence k-εmodel was employed to model the turbulence. The success of the simulation indicates the prospective of wide use of the numerical model as a research and engineering tool to study channel flow and sedimentation problems in the dike zone.
