Abstract: Through comprehensive analysis of bed slope, channel width, streamwise velocity adjustment, and the effect of unsteady flood, the characteristics of sediment transportation and channel aggradation in the alluvial Yellow River are studied. The phenomena of violent scouring when flood rises and heavy deposition as flood falls is discussed. The relationship between friction force and sediment transportation in moving bed is presented. In dynamic equilibrium state of high sediment transportation capacity, the river will show the state of “the more sediment input, the more sediment output”. This is the flow dynamic condition for streamwise river channel scouring. It is also pointed out that the fundamental reason for long distance river channel erosion is that the speed of bed sediment is slower than that of the flood wave which makes the change of bed slope having no significant effect on bed form and sediment transportation.
