Abstract: Kwangyang port phase III container terminal project will be constructed in Kwangyang Bay in the south of Korea. The navigation channel will be dredged from-5m to-15m. The dredged material will be disposed within a dike disposal area in the bay. Physical model was adopted to study sedimentation problem for Kwangyang container terminal project. The sediment sources of sedimentation and causes of sedimentation in the bay were analyzed. The hydrodynamic environment is relatively weak, current velocities are usually less than sediment incipient velocity, and rate of siltation is only 1 cm·yr -1 -4 cm·yr -1 before the construction of the project. The flow tests showed that the effects of the project on high and low tidal levels are less than 3cm. The tidal currents in front of the wharf reduced about 10cm·s -1. The total sedimentation rate of navigation channel in front of phase III container wharf is in the range of 10cm-20cm in a normal year, 12.5cm-24cm in a flood year. The sedimentation rate in dredged navigation channel is 2-3times as large as that of existing case, and 3-3.5 times as large as that of the region without dredged. The sedimentation rate is generally larger during the first year after construction.
