Abstract: A permeable type sabo dam has become increasingly popular from the viewpoint of the comprehensive sediment management in the river basin. The debris flow capturing effects of the grid type sabo dam were estimated numerically and experimentally. The three-dimensional interlocking of boulders near the open spaces greatly affects the blocking of the dam. In the experiment, the sediment discharge downstream of the dam, the particle velocities and the particle size distributions near the dam were measured. The effect of the grid type sabo dam and the situations of flow and deposition were clarified. In the numerical model proposed by Miyazawa et al. (2003), boulders in the debris flow are treated by 3D-DEM (3D distinct element method) and the mixture of gravels and water is treated as continuum. Because the deposition process of particles treated by DEM was expressed inadequately in the model, the situations of flow and deposition were different between calculation and experiment. However, if the model will be improved, it will be able to estimate the function of real permeable type sabo dam.
