Abstract: A comprehensive hydrologic survey has been investigated in the Yangtze River Estuary in September 2002. The investigation lasted about nine days, and an astronomical spring tide, a mean tide and a neap tide were investigated. The investigation consists of five ADCP’s sections and thirty-one vertical survey-lines. According to surveyed data of ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiles) and suspended sediment concentration, flow field in the Yangtze River Estuary and its impact on sediment transportation is analyzed. It has been shown that transversal circulation and horizontal circulation occur in the Yangtze River Estuary, caused by Coriolis force and river curvature, in addition to vertical circulation. At the same time, there are three circulation modes of suspended sediment transportation there.
