Abstract: In-situ instrument LISST-100 was used to measure in-situ particle size, volume concentration of flocculated suspended sediments in the Changjiang estuary during 2003. This paper shows, when the concentration of total suspended matter (TSM) is known, the in-situ mean effective density (∆ρ) and mean settling velocity (ωS) of suspended flocculated sediment may be computed by using the LISST, based on the average values of mean grain size and volume concentration. It’s suggests that laser diffraction instruments are capable of measuring floc size and volume concentration of flocs. The results proved that the dynamic conditions influence the in situ floc formation. From the spatial variation of mean density and in situ particle size, it is possible to calculate the spatial difference in settling velocity.
