Abstract: The paper presents a series of flood control and disaster mitigation issues existing in the middle reach of the Yangtze River, such as river regime change, excessive floodwater, design flood levels of the dykes in the middle and lower reaches, construction of flood diversion and detention areas and non-structural measures. The corresponding countermeasures to tackle the problem of flood protection are proposed.
