Abstract: Annual variations in river channel erosion and depostion in the Longmen-Tongguan reach of the Yellow River are analyzed in this paper. The analysis covers a period starting from Sanmenxia reservoir’s impoundment in September, 1960. By analyzing the spatial pattern of erosion and deposition, it is found that the fluvial processes during 1960-1973 was mainly controlled by the retrogressive erosion due to the operation of the Sanmenxia reservoir; its river channel was basically in equilibrium because of a favorable hydrological condition of incoming runoff and sediment during 1974-1985; and during the period of 1986-2001deposition occurred along the reach because of an unfavorable hydrological condition of incoming runoff and sediment. A good positive correlation exists between Tongguan elevation and the accumulative sedimentation volume in the reach from Longmen to Tongguan with a correlation coefficient up to 0.9. It can be considered that the rising of Tongguan elevation is mainly caused by deposition along the reach from Longmen to Tongguan since 1974.
