Abstract: A close attention was paid to the sediment of the riverbed when the Third Channel of the Gezhouba Project is open to navigation. The Channel is operated adhering to the design concept and management principle of “still water for navigation and moving water for sediment flushing”, meanwhile, flood releasing is involved in the action many times during the secondary stage works, in which different kinds of sediment movement presented. On the basis of many years’observation of the prototype, this paper systematically describes the sediment deposits amount and its distribution on the channel riverbed caused by the circulation current and density current in the initial stage when the channel was put into operation, and analyses the influence on releasing floods in the Channel, and finally discusses the effect of the sediment flushing.
