Abstract: Following the completion of the Extended Plan of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project (Middle Route Scheme), the capacity, catchment area and normal pool level of the Danjiangkou reservoir, the water source of the project, will change greatly, and the operating scheme of the reservoir will be shifted from annual regulation to multiple-year partial regulation. These changes will exert new effects in the fluctuating environments such as river channel evolution of the variable backwater region, water quality in the reservoir as well as the local micro-climate. This paper describes the mechanism causing these changes and puts forward some countermeasures.
