Abstract: A sediment trapping and removal system has been devised for use in existing waterways. The sandtrap is characterized by a triangle-formed, prefabricated concrete structure, with its sloping side partially covered with horizontal beams. It is placed on the bottom of an existing waterway, no excavation is required. A perforated pipe system, consisting of steel pipes with orifices, removes, by self-suction or pumping, the accumulated sand from the trap. Calculations and model tests are made, so that parameters of the system are determined to give reasonable flow conditions. The system is demonstrated for use inAlvkarleby power station to solve the sediment transport problem in the headrace leading to the station.
