Abstract: The expert-knowledge approach to develop fuzzy rule-based systems has been compared to three data-driven methods to model the microhabitat suitability for tree size classes of brown trout (Salmo trutta L. ). The simultaneous optimisation of the fuzzy sets, membership functions and fuzzy rules presented the best training cross-validation performance but poor transferability. Although the expert-knowledge approach generalized better in two out of three size classes, our results indicated that the best approach is problem specific.
