Abstract: Data on suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) are required in many hydro-environmental investigations, increasingly with expectations for both high temporal and spatial resolution and accuracy under complex conditions such as vegetated flows. Herein the potential of optical backscatter turbidity sensors was explored for vegetated flows in flume investigations. We show that in flume conditions high correlation and linearity between the sensor output and SSC are achievable. However, the performance of the tested sensors was very sensitive to the calibration environment and the sediment used.
