Abstract: Since the flow interruption and water pollution situation of the Yellow River became increasingly serious, the rapid identification of areas suffering serious Ecological Water Deficit (EWD) and the dynamic assessment of Ecological Water Utilization (EWU) and Ecological Water Requirement (EWR) have been of significance to ecological construction and sustainable utilization of water resources in a catchment. Based on GIS and RS technologies and the observation data of the meteorological stations, spatial distribution ofEcological Water Requirement (EWR) and Ecological Water Deficit (EWD) of riparian zone in the middle reaches of the Yellow River was plotted and simulated by ArcGIS using the Penman-Monteith method. Landscape pattern indices were extracted from six periods land use data obtained through interpretation of the Landsat data in 1990,1995,2000,2005,2010, and 2015 in the middle reaches of the Yellow River for analysis of the relationship between Ecological Water Requirement (EWR) and the landscape pattern. All the findings in this study may serve as certain basis for allocation of water resources.
