Abstract: The authors conducted swimming experiments in the field using the small Goby (Gymnogobius urotaenia sp. ) to study the relationship between tail beats and swimming speed. The experimental equipment used was a stamina tunnel, which was installed at a local dry riverbed. The movement of the tail beats of the gobies was analyzed using a high-speed camera. As a result, the gobies, which have a body length of 2–4 cm, swam with a tail beat frequency of 20.6–55.9 times per second, at 15.7–46.3 times its own total body length per second, and a positive correlation was found between the swimming speed and the frequency. This enabled us to obtain an experimental formula defining the relationship between swimming speed and the frequency of tail beats.
