Abstract: To uncover the effects of Water Diversion from Yangtze River to Lake Taihu on the phytoplankton habitat of the main channel Wangyu River, we investigated the water physicochemical parameters and phytoplankton communities during the water diversion and non-diversion periods in the winter of 2014~2016, respectively. The contents of nutrients and organic pollutants in the Wangyu River channel were decreased significantly during water diversion periods. Moreover, the phytoplankton diversity and relative proportions of Bacillariophyta during the diversion periods were increased evidently. The alien algae species from Yangtze River and the contents of water turbidity, COD and TP contributed to the variations in phytoplankton communities in winter. The increasing gradient in contents of nutrients and organic pollutants from the Yangtze River to Lake Taihu revealed the potential allochthonous pollutant inputs along with Wangyu River. To further control pollutants from tributaries of Wangyu River is critical to improve the phytoplankton habitats in river channel and Lake Taihu.
