Abstract: Although reservoirs and dams are useful structures in water conservancy projects, they also pose a high-risk potential for the socio-economy and eco-environment in downstream areas. Especially the eco-environmental concerns associated with the cascade hydropower development are gradually increasing, which should be paid urgent attention, and the corresponding water resources exploitation and management should be sustainable and steady. Dadu River, located in Sichuan Province, Southwestern China, is a tributary of the Yangtze River, has been heavily hydropower-developed in the form of cascade reservoirs, and is taken as the study area. In the paper, the influence of the cascade hydropower development in Dadu River Basin to the downstream ecoenvironmen t is analyzed, and the analysis results illustrate that the construction of cascade reservoirs can change the reaches of the Dadu river hydrological regime, affect the discharge volume, water quality, water environmental capacity, biological populations and soil erosion, and eventually threaten the eco-environment security and environmental geology. On the basis, corresponding recommendations of mitigating or minimizing the potential eco-environmental impacts are provided, which can ensure the sustainable development of water and ecology environment to some degree.
