Proximal Factors for Potamodromous Fish Spawning in a Trasandean Tropical River

Abstract: Environmental factors that trigger the onset and determine the end of fishes spawning seasons are poorly understood in tropical rivers. During two annual cycles (March 2004–December 2015) ichthyoplankton was sampled weekly and environmental variables were measured in the Magdalena River (Colombia). Although water parameters were important to fish spawning, larval density of fish species rose with decreasing solar light caused by clouds and rains, and the subsequent rise of water levels; these two factors were synchronized with low moon brightness. Fish seasonal reproduction has been described in other tropical rivers where migratory fishes spawn when the river floods. Nevertheless, most papers have only taken into consideration the changes in water level, rainfall and the temperature as the main variables correlated with fish reproduction.
