Abstract: Based on two case studies, the paper focuses upon flood loss assessment methods and potential losses in two study areas of a river and a flash flood in Bangladesh. Flood loss research is mainly developed–countries oriented. There is hardly any basic flood loss research in Bangladesh. The paper aims to developing assessment methods and thereby generates standard depth-duration damage data sets for Bangladesh. An important aim is to accumulate a knowledge base of flood impacts to various properties and also agriculture sector, which is expected to contribute to appropriate policy formulations on flood loss management. Unlike in flood loss assessment methods generated in developed countries, investigation of actual floods using appropriately-designed survey instruments proves to be feasible in the construction of reasonably high-quality standard potential flood loss data sets for Bangladesh. The construction of data sets through regressions is preferred because it is more realistic and cost-effective. In Bangladesh, this form of modelling is found to be suitable for project appraisals.
