Abstract: Ecological and geomorphological functionalities on the Rh^one river have suffered from several generations of developments along the river itself and its catchment area. Two main generations of development occurred: rip rap dykes and groynes, during the 19 century, to improve navigation conditions, and CNR development, during the 20 century, focused on hydraulic power. It deeply modified the alluvial dynamics, leading to a simplification of natural environments and a disruption of flows during floods. In partnership with the French Water Basin Agency, CNR conducted several operations to reactivate the river dynamics by dismantling former19 century dykes. Operations starts with a determination of the most suited sites based on an assessment of potentialities and constrains. The, design studies lean on an improved diagnosis of each site (including hydraulic modelling, geotechnical investigations, etc. ) and are carried out in concertation with stakeholders. Since 2009, groundworks started on several sites. First results of monitoring display encouraging results for the sites to come.
