Abstract: The population of Mortonagrion hirosei, one species of Odonata emerging in brackish water area, living in the understory of reeds in the tidal wetland, restored by building a suitable habitat. Floods are considered the crucial factor of the habitat destruction and responsible for the loss of species. Therefore, this study investigated the velocity, one of main environmental stress, in flow variation inside and outside the reeds, and analyze the range of flood impact on the larvae habitat by laboratory experiments. In this study, we carried out flume experiments to investigate the shear stress variation in and around the reeds. The results of the flume experiments suggested under a 2-year flood, dominant flood for sediment transport, the velocity in flow reduces by 35% compared with that without reeds and the range of flood impact on the larvae is close to 6 meters. The results of this study may enhance the comprehensive understanding of the vegetation effects on flow characteristics and may also provide some guidance for restoration of Mortonagrion hirosei.
