Abstract: Flood and riverbank erosion are major hazards occurring every year in Bangladesh and especially Char-lands are the most vulnerable to these hazards. The present study attempts to identify the issues of disaster risk management capacity for char-land women. Results from field observation, questionnaire survey, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), different tools of Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) from two island char villages of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna riverine areas under Sirajganj district found that during hazards more women fall in danger compare to men because they are not warned, and cannot leave the house alone. Moreover, the major affected sectors of flood hazards on char-land women are unreachable safe drinking water, healthcare services, fragile sanitation system, unreachable education services, challenging cooking and meal preparation, tough communication etc. Apart this workload of women and domestic violence increases by hazards causes women to work harder to secure their livelihoods, also create problem in decision making processes, income generating activities and access to market. Creating awareness, accessibility to market, access to education, access to health care facilities, capacity building, ensuring social safety net of women and more participation in decision making process at household level can reduce the risks and vulnerabilities of flood disasters to the Char-land women.
