Mapping and Change Detection of Floodplain Vegetation by Remote Sensing (Sentinel-2 in Google Earth Engine) for Water Management on River Delta Scale

Abstract: The floodplains of the Rhine and Meuse rivers in the Netherlands are important for the conveyance of high waters. These embanked floodplains have a limited conveyance capacity and thus must comply with specific legal requirements regarding the amount and type of vegetation located within these floodplains. Providing objective and up-to-date information from satellite images on potential changes of the vegetation cover allows for a quick scan of potential risk areas that might need vegetation management to maintain the conveyance capacity. Using Google Earth Engine based analyses of ESA Sentinel-2 images we compared the current state of the vegetation with a benchmark map created in 2012 and applied a change detection method that can indicate changes over time. These analyses are visualized in a web viewer for easy access by the responsible managers.
