Abstract: An experimental structure was installed for the definition of environmental flows in streams of the water supply system for Quito, Ecuador. A suitable reach was identified in the headwaters of a tropical high-altitude watershed, where a laboratory designed, and calibrated structure was placed to conduct experimental reductions of flow. The design is a two v-notch system of different and complementary openings to derivate flow from the stream into a buried pipe and then return the volume of water before an intake for the water system. The structure is one of the first conceived in the field of e-flows to provide water managers with science-based recommendations for artificial flow releases.
