Using Next Generation Sequencing to Analyze Prey Dna in Faeces of an Avian Predator in Taiwan

Abstract: Molecular scatology can characterize these predator diets via the identification of mixed and degraded preyfragments in predator faeces. Through the next generation sequencing (NGS), we study the diet of Brow Dippers in the breeding and non-breeding seasons in Taiwan. Both in breeding or non-breeding seasons, Brown Dippers consumed more Ephemeroptera than other insects. In addition to the insects, they consumed more Diptera and Trichoptera in the non-breeding and breeding seasons, respectively. Almost half of insect sequences could not be identified by BOLD (Barcode of Life Data System) database. The need of local reference database is urgent to achieve more accurate prey identification, and it will be helpful for the development of relevant diet studies.
