Abstract: Urbanization and modernization of agriculture are considered major threats to ecosystems in rural environment s. Specifically, concrete lining of a natural stream can reduce important habitats for preventing fast flowing water. It is therefore needed to assess habitat quality and quantity in urban rivers and streams for balancing development of a city and ecosystems conservation. This study focuses mainly on Lefua echigonia (D. S. Jordan & R. E. Richardson, 1907), an endangered fish species inhabiting Japan. The objectives of the study were; to develop a presence/absence-based multivariate habitat suitability model for this fish species as well as a competing fish species, namely Nipponocypris temminckii and to apply the 1D physical habitat simulation to assess habitat suitability for the fish in a target river in Tokyo.
