Abstract: During 2001–2008, AARI (St. Petersburg, Russia) carried out number of expeditions in the northeastern part of the Barents Sea that included studies on icebergs and the outlet glaciers they calve from. Firstly, these studies had been performed in the scope of engineering surveys for the Stockman Gas Condensate Field (spring of 2001–spring of 2007). In autumn of 2007 and in 2008, studies were continued in accordance with the program of International Polar Year (IPY). Works required the set down of scientific groups on to the largest icebergs and on glaciers of the Franz-Josef land archipelago and Novaya Zemlya. From the results of performed studies we have obtained data on the vertical temperature distribution in icebergs and in glaciers from the day surface to horizons of 10–15 m, data on the ice density and compression strength (by tests performed with the help of core auger). At studying physical and mechanical properties of ice, texture and crystal structure of ice cores were described. The report presents summary on results of studies and analysis of the current state of the gletcher ice in the Barents Sea.
