Abstract: Unsteady velocity profiles under a floating cover are examined through the use of differential pressure probes (Prandlt tubes). The applicability of using Prandlt tubes for unsteady flow measurements is assessed through direct comparison to ADV measurements. For this particular investigation, point velocity data collected under unsteady flow using Prandlt tubes was considered representative of the “mean” velocity variations after appropriate digital filtering. Initial observations suggest that the behaviour of unsteady velocity profiles under a floating cover are analogous to those under open water conditions. In addition, the so-called two-point method for estimating mean velocity appears applicable for unsteady flow under a floating cover.
