Abstract: We investigated the occurrence of flood damage in the Kyushu region caused by heavy rainfall in July 2020. The Kuma River basin recorded the largest inundation depth ever recorded, and vertical evacuation was difficult in some areas. Many of the casualties were due to drowning, especially in the Hitoyoshi basin, where many people were killed or injured inside their houses. Other watersheds were also characterized by a large number of casualties due to flooding and inundation, including drowning. On the other hand, in the Ashikita area, human casualties due to landslides were observed. In the Kuma River basin, the case of disastrous disaster at a special nursing home suggested that the evacuation system for the elderly and other vulnerable people, which has been a problem in the past, was not sufficiently developed.
