Abstract: This paper presents the application of the Delft3D-FLOW ice module in two-dimensional modelling of the river ice jam of the Chaudière River, Québec, Canada. Delft3D-FLOW is a flexible numerical modelling suite that can simulate several riverine and coastal processes, including flow, wave, sediment, and water quality. In recent years, the model has been equipped with an ice module to simulate ice processes. Some successful model applications for coastal waters and lakes are presented in the literature. This paper evaluates the model’s capability for simulation of river ice and ice jam. It is shown that the model can satisfactorily simulate the ice-jam profile and the backwater effects in the Chaudière River. The results suggest that the model can be used for the complex river and ice hydraulics conditions, where the typical river ice models are insufficient.
